Sabbath for people

The 4th of the 10 commandments requires that people must rest on the Sabbath day. (Deuteronomy 5:12-15).

In the fourth commandment, God showed that people could combine an attitude of reverence towards Him with an attitude of care for their own needs and those of other fellow human beings. The weekly Sabbath encouraged people to worship God since the day was set apart for Him as holy, but at the same time, it benefited them by making sure they had adequate rest from their regular work. The Sabbath was intended to give rest to all slaves from overworking themselves.

Service leader?

God had given the law to Moses long ago and the Jews had to obey God’s laws. The scribes and the Pharisees were responsible for teaching the law to the people. But the Pharisees had added hundreds of their own rules to explain God’s law. They said that people should obey all these rules. But they often avoided their own rules. Jesus did not want people to copy this bad behaviour. These teachers tried to appear good, but they wanted honour for themselves rather than for God.

Jesus is Christ

A group of Sadducees came to Jesus with a question. According to the law of Moses, if a man died childless, his brother was to have a temporary marital relationship with the widow for the purpose of producing an heir (Deut 25:5-6). The question put by the Sadducees concerned an unlikely situation where a widow would meet seven husbands, all brothers, in the resurrection. Since Sadducees did not believe in any form of life after death, their question was intended to make fun of Jesus and the doctrine of the resurrection.

Day of the Lord

The day of the LORD is the intervention of God in judgement where He is expected to restore people and bless them. Israelites thought that this day would be one of victory and rejoicing for them because their enemies would be destroyed. Amos tells them that when God acts in judgement, He will act against all the wicked, and Israel will be the first to suffer. There will be no way of escape, no place of safety, when God’s judgement falls (verse 18-20).
