Jesus the logos

To Israelites of Old Testament times, God’s word was more than something written down or spoken out. It was something active so that when God expressed His will, that will be carried out. God spoke, and it was done (Genesis 1:3; Psalm 33:9; Isaiah 55:10-11 ). By His active word, God created the universe (Gen 1:6,9,14; Ps 33:6 ). God’s word had such life and power that people thought of it almost as if it were a person – God’s living agent or messenger (Psalm 107:20; 147:15,18 ).

Sabbath for people

The 4th of the 10 commandments requires that people must rest on the Sabbath day. (Deuteronomy 5:12-15).

In the fourth commandment, God showed that people could combine an attitude of reverence towards Him with an attitude of care for their own needs and those of other fellow human beings. The weekly Sabbath encouraged people to worship God since the day was set apart for Him as holy, but at the same time, it benefited them by making sure they had adequate rest from their regular work. The Sabbath was intended to give rest to all slaves from overworking themselves.

Marriage as brewed by God

People can have good relations with one another only as they consider one another. When they insist on their rights without considering others, they only destroy harmony and fellowship (verse 21). And I agree that this verse forms the preamble for the discussion on the roles of husbands and wives that follow from the next verse. The verse talks about submitting to each other. A Jewish man, in his morning prayer, would thank God for three things. These were that God had not made him a Gentile, a slave, or a woman.

Women of Bashan

Many people knew about the cows of Bashan. The cows were big there (Psalm 22:12), and they ate good grass (Micah 7:14; Jeremiah 50:19 ). They were probably the best cows in Israel. Amos compares these cows to the rich women. This is an insult. These women did not care about poor people. Also, they had too much power in their homes (see 1 Timothy 3:11). They were not responsible.

How Excellent is your Name

Psalm 8 is the second messianic psalm after Psalm 2. This is evident from its quotation in Hebrews 2, which clarifies that this psalm is about the Lord Jesus. Psalm 8 is the first song of praise in Psalms. This psalm is the only one addressed to God alone. This is remarkable because it is about the true Man, the Son of Man, Who came to glorify God only after He fell into the earth like the grain of wheat and died (John 12:24).
