Jesus anointed

The Passover was only two days away, and Jesus knew its significance to His coming death. Israelites kept the Feast of Passover and Unleavened Bread as an annual week-long festival in commemoration of ancient Israel’s deliverance from Egypt. God ‘passed over’ those houses where a lamb had been sacrificed in the place of those under judgment (Exodus 12:1-13).

Jesus in the temple

After Jesus’ triumphant entry to Jerusalem, He entered the temple but it was not ready for God. God had come to His temple. (See Malachi 3:1-3). Inside its gates, people were doing business. There was a market in its yard. Some people were selling the special coins that people used in the temple. Other people were selling birds and animals. People bought birds and animals there to give them to God.

The 12 called

Jesus’ work was already becoming heavy. He has started preaching and had many people following Him already. So urgent was the need that Jesus decided to appoint twelve helpers immediately. These helpers were first to become companions for Jesus, then he trains them to become heralds of His message.

Sabbath for people

The 4th of the 10 commandments requires that people must rest on the Sabbath day. (Deuteronomy 5:12-15).

In the fourth commandment, God showed that people could combine an attitude of reverence towards Him with an attitude of care for their own needs and those of other fellow human beings. The weekly Sabbath encouraged people to worship God since the day was set apart for Him as holy, but at the same time, it benefited them by making sure they had adequate rest from their regular work. The Sabbath was intended to give rest to all slaves from overworking themselves.

Solitude for empowerment

Further examples of the ministry of Jesus show the presence and power of the kingdom of God in healing those afflicted by Satan

On one occasion when Jesus was staying in Capernaum, he went outside the town to find a quiet place to pray to His Father. Peter thought he was losing valuable opportunities, as the town was full of people looking for him. Jesus replied that no matter how many needy people were in Capernaum, could not stay there all the time. He had to work and preach in other towns as well.
