Jesus in the temple

After Jesus’ triumphant entry to Jerusalem, He entered the temple but it was not ready for God. God had come to His temple. (See Malachi 3:1-3). Inside its gates, people were doing business. There was a market in its yard. Some people were selling the special coins that people used in the temple. Other people were selling birds and animals. People bought birds and animals there to give them to God.

Come to me

The people who taught God’s Law did not believe Jesus’ message. The people who thought that they were wise did not believe His message. They were those who thought themselves wise – “wise” according to the world’s estimation of wisdom, 1 Cor 1:26-27. By the wise and prudent here Jesus had reference probably to the proud and haughty scribes and Pharisees in Capernaum. They rejected His gospel, but it was the pleasure of God to reveal it to obscure and more humble people. The reason given, the only satisfactory reason, is that it so seemed good in the sight of God.

These helpers were first to become companions for Jesus, then he trains them to become heralds of His message.

Christ’s home in our hearts

‘For this reason, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.’ It was the custom of Jews to stand when they prayed (see Matthew 6:5; Luke 18:11; 13 ). However, sometimes they would kneel. This would show a great desire to pray. Ezra (Ezra 9:5) and Jesus prayed like this. Jesus fell to the ground in the garden. This was just before he died on the cross (Matthew 26:39). Stephen prayed like this just before he died (Acts 7:60).

Why worry?

Jesus in the earlier verses had spoken about the danger of wealth and possessions. Here, He is speaking to disciples who have few possessions. They may be quite poor. Life is more than the basic necessities of food and clothes. God gave us life. So He will give us the things that are necessary for us to live.
