Jesus anointed

The Passover was only two days away, and Jesus knew its significance to His coming death. Israelites kept the Feast of Passover and Unleavened Bread as an annual week-long festival in commemoration of ancient Israel’s deliverance from Egypt. God ‘passed over’ those houses where a lamb had been sacrificed in the place of those under judgment (Exodus 12:1-13).

Jesus in the temple

After Jesus’ triumphant entry to Jerusalem, He entered the temple but it was not ready for God. God had come to His temple. (See Malachi 3:1-3). Inside its gates, people were doing business. There was a market in its yard. Some people were selling the special coins that people used in the temple. Other people were selling birds and animals. People bought birds and animals there to give them to God.

Enemies foiled

Nehemiah had solved the problem that caused the poor people to complain. The people had built the wall, but they had not finished the gates. But the enemies of the people did not give up. They still tried to stop the work. Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem were enemies of the rebuilding work, and Nehemiah’s leadership would not give in. But Nehemiah was fortified by prayer and total reliance on God. With the wall nearing completion, the enemies saw that their only hope lay in getting rid of Nehemiah himself. They tried to draw him out into the country where they could murder him, but Nehemiah was aware of their tricks (verses 1-4).
