How to win the battle

For Christians, life involves warfare, though the battle is not with earthly forces but with spiritual powers. The believer is involved in a struggle against hostile demonic powers who have rebelled against God and opposed His people. As ancient soldiers wore armor when they fought their battles, Christians must prepare themselves for conflict.

Christian family

In Ephesians 5:22-33, Paul considers the case of husbands and wives, in 6:1-4 the case of parents and children, and in 6:5-9 the case of masters and servants. In union with Christ, people within these various categories share the same spiritual status (Gal 3:28). But in the family and society, people have different functions, and they must know how they should act towards each other.

Marriage as brewed by God

People can have good relations with one another only as they consider one another. When they insist on their rights without considering others, they only destroy harmony and fellowship (verse 21). And I agree that this verse forms the preamble for the discussion on the roles of husbands and wives that follow from the next verse. The verse talks about submitting to each other. A Jewish man, in his morning prayer, would thank God for three things. These were that God had not made him a Gentile, a slave, or a woman.

Maturing into one body

Yesterday, we were urged to be tolerant of each other and accommodate our physical and social differences. Today, we turn our attention to the spiritual giftings and differences. Just as people in the church differ from one another, so the spiritual gifts that Christ has given for the functioning of the church vary from person to person (verse 7).

One, One, One, One, One, One, One

The teachings of Paul to the Ephesians, when generally divided can be 1-3 and 4-6. In chapters 1-3, Paul thought about God and His Son Jesus Christ and the church and our salvation. In chapters 4-6 he teaches practical ways to live as Christians. We see practical ways in which God’s glory enters the church. Then Paul shows how the church will express God’s glory to the world.

Love of God

No matter what happens to Christians, nothing can separate them from the unchanging love of God.

Even while we are suffering, we shall not be without hope. That hope will not disappoint us because God is on our side. Nobody can successfully oppose us, and so we shall overcome. We shall win a great victory. We shall win by the power of God who loved us.
