SCRIPTURE 📖 In His Image

11  I have stored what you have said in my heart, so I won’t sin against you.

12  Blessed are you, LORD! Teach me your statutes.

13  I have spoken with my lips about all your decrees that you have announced.

14  I find joy in the path of your decrees as if I owned all kinds of riches.

15  I will meditate on your precepts, and I will respect your ways.

16  I am delighted with your statutes; I will not forget your word.

17  Deal kindly with your servant so I may live and keep your word.

18  Open my eyes so that I will observe amazing things from your instruction.

19  Since I am a stranger on the earth, do not hide your commands from me.

20  My soul is consumed with longing for your decrees at all times.

21  You rebuke the accursed ones, who wander from your commands.

22  Remove scorn and disrespect from me, for I observe your decrees.

23  Though nobles take their seat and gossip about me, your servant will meditate on your statutes.

24  I take joy in your decrees, for they are my counselors.

25  My soul clings to the dust; revive me according to your word.

BACKGROUND ✝ Abiding In His Words
Psalm 119 is an acrostic psalm in form.  The psalm is divided into twenty-two sections, corresponding to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet, the original language in which it was written. Each section has eight verses, and all eight verses in any one section begin with the same letter. (For example, one might imagine an acrostic poem in English with the first eight lines all beginning with A, the second eight lines all beginning with B, and so on down to Z.)

This psalm is a lengthy meditation addressed to God on the excellencies of His law. The law here refers not to legal requirements such as in the law of Moses, but to the whole of God’s instruction for humankind in general. Therefore, God’s law is also called His word, commandments, sayings, judgments, statutes, ordinances, instructions, precepts, injunctions, testimonies, promises, ways, and paths. At least one of these words occurs in almost every verse of the psalm.

The psalmist knows that if he has this desire to be guided by God’s word, his life will be full of purpose and meaning. Though he may be unsure of his future (17-20), mocked by friends (21-22), or persecuted by rulers (23), he will always be loyal to God’s word.
