Before Jesus returns

  • Rev. Bright Mawuena Nfodzo
Date preached August 12, 2023

2 “Do you see these large buildings?” Jesus responded. “Not one stone here will be left on another that will not be torn down.”

3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives facing the Temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew were asking him privately,

4 “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign when these things will be put into effect?”

5 Jesus began to say to them, “See to it that no one deceives you.

6 Many will come in my name and say, ‘I AM,’ and they will deceive many people.

7 But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, stop being alarmed. These things must take place, but the end hasn’t come yet,

8 because nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes and famines in various places. These things are only the beginning of the birth pains.”

9 “As for yourselves, be on your guard! People will hand you over to local councils, and you will be beaten in their synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings to testify to them because of me.

10 But first, the gospel must be proclaimed to all nations.

11 When they take you away and hand you over for trial, don’t worry ahead of time about what you will say. Instead, say whatever is given to you at that time, because it won’t be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.

13 You will be hated continuously by everyone because of my name. But the person who endures to the end will be saved.”

The Jerusalem temple of Jesus’ days was a large and beautiful building. King Herod began to build it about 50 years before, and marble and a lot of gold were used for the building. There were yards, rooms, and other buildings around the temple. These were all big and beautiful. The whole place was at the top of a hill.

But Jesus said that those buildings would not always be there. He was right. Forty (40) years later, the enemies of the Jews destroyed all those buildings. Even the best things in this world will have an end.

When some of the disciples questioned Jesus about certain signs, He described the troubles that will happen before His return. There would be wars, famine, and false prophets. This will not be true, but many people will still believe them.

These things have to happen before Jesus’ return. They happen because Jesus has not yet returned. They are the beginning of the troubles. Even worse things will happen before Jesus’ return.

There will be many troubles for Christians. Theirs is the new world when Jesus returns. So they should not be surprised if people in this world do not like them. Some people will be very cruel to the Christians. They will take the Christians to their judges with false accusations. And many Christians will die because they believe.

But Jesus said that Christians should not be afraid. God will be with them. His Holy Spirit will give them the words to speak to the judges. And Christians have an important message for everyone. They must tell God’s good news in every country. Nothing should stop them from preaching the good news.

In the end, God will save His people. Enemies may kill their bodies. But they will always live in heaven. There, they will be safe, and nobody will hurt them then.

🔷 Christians must continue to evangelize the world for Christ Jesus alone

🔷 Pain and suffering are part of the makeup of the believer

🔷 Beware of magicians and self-seeking life-styled Christians who parade themselves as pastors and prophets

💥 Pray the Spirit of God will help in troubles
💥 Ask for discernment to know the truth

The believer must never give up in the face of trouble. The Spirit of God is the weapon for victory- in the strength of Christ Jesus and the power of God, we need to remain alert and stay in the plan of God. When we endure to the end we shall be rewarded.
