Hearken to God

  • Rev. Bright Mawuena Nfodzo
Date preached September 1, 2022

17 And to Adam He said, “Because you have hearkened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree—of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it!’—the ground is cursed for your sake. In sorrow shall you eat of it all the days of your life.

18 It shall also bring forth thorns and thistles to you, and thus you shall eat the herbs of the field;

19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust, you shall return.”

Sin and punishment came into the world after our first parents disobeyed the instructions of God. So the experience and evidence of since are around human beings. It is sin that makes life troublous and gives death its sting.

God punished the serpent, Eve and Adam for their roles in inviting ain into the world. Every other sin that human beings commit today is only a copy of the original sin committed by our forebears.

Human beings were made in God’s image, and since God was unlimited, the first human couple soon showed that they too wanted to be unlimited. They had to remember, however, that they were not God; they were only creatures made in the image of God. Just as the image of the moon on the water could not exist independently of the moon, they could not exist independently of God.

The disorder created by human sin brought with it suffering for the whole human race. From this time on, people could live in God’s world and reproduce their own kind only through suffering. Conflict entered human relationships, and even the harmony between husband and wife became spoiled through domination.

God intended to give good things to people. He intended to show people how they could live well on the earth. But Adam and Eve did not obey God. They did what He had told them not to do. That spoiled God’s plans. Therefore, people would not have all the good things from God. They would not have plenty to eat. They would have to work very hard and sweat for their basic needs.

God made a human being’s body out of the things that He had already made. But He created the spirit out of nothing. (See Genesis 2:7).

More important to us, our family relationships should not threaten our godly life. No matter what, you cannot choose your spouse, family, or earthly satisfaction before or against God.

🔷 We shall inherit the curse of our forebears and sweat to go through this world. Life would never be simple or rosy.

🔷 We must hearken to the voice of God, and never that of any family or acquaintances

🔷 We must always remember that we came from dust and can easily be turned to dust in the twinkle of an eye.

💥 Thank God for a new week and pray for forgiveness of sins
💥Pray for God’s grace to go through every trouble and overcome every curse

God’s plan will still be perfect in our present circumstances and predicaments. His eyes will be on us to help us through our ‘sweat’.
