How to win the battle

  • Rev. Bright Mawuena Nfodzo
Date preached December 22, 2023

SCRIPTURE 📖
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord, relying on his mighty strength.

11 Put on the whole armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the devil’s strategies.

12 For our struggle is not against human opponents, but against rulers, authorities, cosmic powers in the darkness around us, and evil spiritual forces in the heavenly realm.

13 For this reason, take up the whole armor of God so that you may be able to take a stand whenever evil comes. And when you have done everything you could, you will be able to stand firm.

14 Stand firm, therefore, having fastened the belt of truth around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15 and being firm-footed in the gospel of peace.

16 In addition to having clothed yourselves with these things, having taken up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to put out all the flaming arrows of the evil one,

17 also take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

BACKGROUND
For Christians, life involves warfare, though the battle is not with earthly forces but with spiritual powers. The believer is involved in a struggle against hostile demonic powers who have rebelled against God and opposed His people. As ancient soldiers wore armor when they fought their battles, Christians must prepare themselves for conflict.

Apart from Jesus, the Christian can do nothing. So the strength that we have is in ‘his great power’, v10. They receive their armor, as well as their strength, from God, but they must fight the battle. Above all, they must make sure that when the battle is over, they are still on their feet (10-13).

Jesus said that Satan is ‘the ruler of this world’ (John 12:31; 14:30 ). John says that ‘the whole world is in the control of the devil’ (1 John 5:19). Paul calls him ‘the god of this age’ (2 Corinthians 4:4). The world is in the power of the devil.

We recall Paul wrote this letter to the Ephesians from prison. In prison, they chained Paul to a Roman soldier. Paul would have watched the soldier who was always near him. He would have seen him put on his armor. The soldier put on each piece in the right order. So Paul tells his readers: Wear your armor as the soldier does.

But our weapons for war are not weapons with sharp points like a sword. They are weapons of the Spirit. You need these so that ‘you can stand against the evil attacks of the Devil’.

In putting on his armor, the Roman soldier first tied his underrobes together by a belt, then put on his breastplate and shoes, and finally took up his shield, helmet, and sword. Christians likewise should be fully prepared to meet the enemy. They must secure the inner life through the truth, and protect the outer life by being morally upright (verse 14).

Their feet must be ready to take the gospel to any place at any time. A firm faith in God will provide them with a shield against the devil’s temptations (verses 15-16).

The knowledge of their sure salvation will assure them of complete victory. As they increase their knowledge of God’s Word, they will be able to use that Word when fighting the enemy (verse 17).

LESSONS✍🏽
🔷 Only the power of God can keep us safe from the evil actions of the devil.

🔷 There are evil forces in this world that are waiting to use schemes to destroy God’s people completely

🔷 Believers must uphold the truth of Jesus’ work of salvation and also be truthful in all their dealings as a strong force against the success of the devil

PRAYER POINTS🙏🏽
💥 Pray that you will know God better and more
💥 Pray for victory against the devil

CONCLUSION📙
The word of God is the sharpest weapon against the devil. When we study, imbibe, and practice the word of God, it will guide our thoughts, feelings, speech, and actions and lead us to a life in the Lord that grants victory all the time. May you always be victorious over the devil.
AMEN
