Jesus Brings Division

  • Rev. Bright Mawuena Nfodzo
Date preached February 6, 2023

49 “I’ve come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already ablaze!

50 I have a baptism to be baptized with, and what stress I am under until it’s completed!

51 Do you think that I came to bring peace on earth? Not at all, I tell you, but rather division!

52 From now on, five people in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three.

53 They will be divided father against son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Jesus warned one more about the need to be prepared for the crisis ahead. He felt a mounting tension as he saw that the cross would mean fiery judgment for some, a baptism of suffering for himself, and conflict for those who are opposed by hostile relatives because of their loyalty to Him.

Jesus had come to bring God’s judgment. It was like a fire that destroys things that have no value. This judgment would occur at the cross, where God judges people’s sins. Jesus came to rescue people from sin. He wished that His work had already begun.

Jesus referred to His death as a ‘baptism’. The word baptism sometimes means suffering (See Mark 10:39.) Jesus knew that He would suffer and die. He felt the great strain as He thought about it. He wanted it to happen soon.

Jesus did bring peace. He made people at peace with God. However, His message also divided people. Some people accepted His message, other people refused to obey Him. This would even divide some families. Jesus used words like those in Micah 7:6. He said that in one family there would be three people on his side and two against Him. Or it would be the other way around. A father will decide one way, a son another way. Mother and daughter will not agree.

In a family, people must be loyal to Jesus first. Their family must take second place, not first place.

🔷 We must confront decisions that are against our faith as believers and not allow family laws to lead us astray

🔷 Jesus will give us the crown when we remain faithful to Him

💥 Thank God for a peaceful week
💥 Pray that Christ will unite your family

We must promote peace everywhere we find ourselves. But at the same time, our search for peace must not promote disloyalty to God or the denunciation of our Maker.
