Jesus calms the storm

  • Rev. Bright Mawuena Nfodzo
Date preached August 17, 2023

35 That day, when evening had come, he told them, “Let’s cross to the other side.”

36 So they left the crowd and took him away in a boat without making any special preparations. Other boats were with him.

37 A violent windstorm came up, and the waves began breaking into the boat, so that the boat was rapidly becoming swamped.

38 But Jesus was in the back of the boat, asleep on a cushion. So they woke him up and asked him, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to die?”

39 Then he got up, rebuked the wind, and told the sea, “Calm down! Be still!” Then the wind stopped blowing, and there was a great calm.

40 He asked them, “Why are you such cowards? Don’t you have any faith yet?”

41 Overcome with fear, they kept saying to one another, “Who is this man? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”

Jesus and His disciples were on Lake Galilee when a fierce storm arose. A well-known feature of the lake was that fierce storms blew up quickly. The lake is below sea level and there are mountains on both sides of it. The wind can rush down the valley without warning and make the lake very dangerous. Some of the disciples used to catch fish and so they knew about these sudden storms. They knew how easily the boat might sink, then they would drown.

Jesus had suggested that the group sail across the lake, but the disciples expressed disappointment with Him when a storm arose and He did nothing to help.

There were several disciples who had worked on the boats there. But even those disciples were very afraid. They thought that they would die.

Jesus was sleeping in the back of the boat, perhaps an indication of His tiredness from constant work (verses 35-38). He was not even aware of the storm until the frightened disciples woke Him.

The disciples still did not understand fully the divine power of Jesus, and He rebuked them for their lack of faith. When a word from Him was sufficient to calm the wild forces of nature, they were struck with a mixture of wonder and fear. The sovereign Lord of creation was among them (see Psalm 89:9).

Sudden temptations, illness, family problems, political troubles, etc are a great danger to a person’s peace of mind. To have faith in the care and power of Jesus is better than to worry and to be afraid.

🔷 Jesus has power over every difficult life situation

🔷 No amount of experience can make us live independently of God

🔷 Faith in Christ gives believers the same power and authority to overcome the challenges of life

💥 Pray to commit every difficult challenge in your life to Jesus
💥 Remember a friend and pray for Him

Let’s turn to Jesus and call upon Him to assist us rather than lament or worry. We must learn to invite Jesus and exercise our faith in Him and we will be fine and overcome the challenges.
