My Yoke is Light

  • Rev. Bright Mawuena Nfodzo
Date preached March 22, 2022

28 “Come to me, all of you who are weary and loaded down with burdens, and I will give you rest.

29 Place my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble, and you will find rest for your souls,

30 because my yoke is pleasant, and my burden is light.”

Throughout the ministry of Jesus, very few of the privileged and learned classes turned to Him as they felt comfortably secure and satisfied with their achievements in life. But many who felt helpless turned to Jesus to satisfy their deepest needs, and through Him came into a new relationship with God. They found true refreshment in learning from Jesus and obeying His teachings. In submitting to His lordship they found true life.

In those days, the Jewish religion had many laws. The leaders had made a series of laws. People who tried to obey all of them became very tired. The laws were like a heavy load that people must carry. The laws became a yoke they carried along.

Jesus invited people to follow Him. They would find that their life with Jesus was ‘easy’. It is ‘easy’ because Jesus cares about His disciples. They would find that His load is light. It is ‘light’ because a disciple follows the example of Jesus. A disciple does not need to obey hundreds of rules. Jesus is gentle and He is humble. He allows people to be free. Then they obey Him because they love Him.

🔷 Those who follow Jesus are freed from many unnecessary laws that are self-gratification but do not honor God

🔷 Jesus’ followers must copy Him, and be humble

💥 Ask God to continue to explain His word to you
💥 Put your load and cares to God

When our attention and concentration is only Jesus, we shall be freed from unnecessary human laws and bondage, and move freely in Christ. Jesus’ work has already paid for all troubles and bondage, as well as human laws that do not glory.
