Nothing Can Separate Us

  • Rev. Bright Mawuena Nfodzo
Date preached March 23, 2022

35 Who will separate us from the Messiah’s love? Can trouble, distress, persecution, hunger, nakedness, danger, or a violent death do this?

36 As it is written, “For your sake, we are being put to death all day long. We are thought of as sheep headed for slaughter.”

37 In all these things we are triumphantly victorious due to the one who loved us.

38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,

39 nor anything above, nor anything below, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is ours in union with the Messiah Jesus, our Lord.

Paul gives a list of 7 possible troubles but strongly suggests that they cannot separate us from the love of God. People might think that such troubles could end our relationship with Christ. But Paul is sure that they cannot do so.

In fact, Paul had known many of these troubles himself (2 Corinthians 11:23-27). People may kill Christians because of their faith. But even this will not separate them from God’s love.

In verse 36, Paul reminds his readers that God’s people suffered in the past. He uses words from Psalm 44:22. These words describe how the people in Israel were suffering. They were suffering because they were loyal to God. They appealed to God to help them. Like them, we may suffer terrible troubles in this world. But like them, we shall overcome because God loves us. Nothing can separate us from Christ’s love.

We should not fear persecution or even martyrdom, because through Christ we are assured of final victory.

🔷 It’s likely you shall be persecuted by colleagues for your truthfulness and loyalty to God. Let it not discourage you.

🔷 Troubles are a part of the Christian journey for every believer. Keep your eye on Jesus who helps all through.

💥 Ask for a persevering spirit to keep to Jesus even in troubles
💥 Pray for God’s grace and love and protection for your family

God’s love for us helps us to endure all and overcome all hardships. Keep your eye on Jesus in all troubles and celebrate God’s gracious love and care and protection. Declare, ‘I am a conqueror’.
