SCRIPTURE 📖 Thank First
1  When the LORD brought back Zion’s exiles, we were like dreamers.

2  Then our mouths were filled with laughter, and our tongues formed joyful shouts. Then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.”

3  The great things that the LORD has done for us gladden us.

4  Restore our exiles, LORD, like the streams of the Negev.

5  Those who weep while they plant will sing for joy while they harvest.

6  The one who goes out weeping, carrying a bag of seeds, will surely return with a joyful song, bearing sheaves from his harvest.

BACKGROUND ✝
The Israelites petition God to give them full restoration after they had been graciously brought out of exile. Before their prayer for full restoration in verse 4, they had already acknowledged that God had done wonderful things for them. It’s important to appreciate God for what He has done for you previously. He did much that you need to show appreciation for.

Remember also that before the harvest comes sowing. You cannot harvest what you have not planted. The waiting period between planting and harvesting is usually characterized by pain, hunger, difficulties, etc that we must mandatorily persevere before we smile. That period is important in the life of every believer. Tilling the land and waiting for the crops to mature is no mean job.

Christian suffering is therefore part of our call as followers of Christ. The apostles suffered, just as Christ. We have been called not only to bear the name of Christ but to carry the cross with Him. ‘No cross, no crown’.

We can show appreciation to God and thank Him in many ways.
1. Resolve to be with the Lord all the time. Don’t go to church only in the first and last weeks of the year. Be a permanent, regular member of the church where you are inspired to live for Christ.
2. Honour God with all your time and resources.

Many people may have died in the year 2018. Others too may be sick and going through serious challenges. But I’m afraid you’ve missed the mark if that is the only reason you have to thank God. It doesn’t matter what is happening to someone before you give thanks to God. Rather concentrate on your life and thank God for His protection and the many other things He has done for you.

Our thanksgiving must precede our requests. Reflect on 2018 and you have uncountable reasons why you should thank God.

While we pray, we act. We don’t sit and expect miracles. Make a move, begin something. God does not sanction laziness. He abhors a lazy attitude.

CONCLUSION 📙
God has a plan for bringing you into 2019. No matter what you go through, God will restore you and bless you.
May the power of Christ bless you and make everything you sow to be harvested in joy in this new year.
AMEN
